A Strong Position, A New Opportunity

PPL Launches Executive Director Search

Project for Pride in Living (PPL) announces the appointment of an interim executive director and the official retention of MJ Scott Search Partners to seek PPL’s next executive director, in light of Steve Cramer’s move to the Minneapolis Downtown Council and Minneapolis Downtown Improvement District, effective December 2, 2013. The PPL board of directors approved an interim management plan that leverages the in-house expertise of PPL’s Vice Presidents, including the appointment of Chief Financial Officer and Vice President Jack Katzmark as interim executive director.

Steve Cramer was only one of three executive directors in PPL’s 41-year history. He became PPL’s second executive director in 1997, after the retirement of PPL founder Joe Selvaggio. Setting a strong course that helped catapult PPL through the late 1990s into the 2000s, Cramer left in 1999 to pursue new career opportunities. Former Saint Paul Mayor Jim Schiebel then took the reins of a growing PPL in 2000. However, as many staff say, “you never really leave PPL,” and in 2003, Steve returned to the helm as PPL’s executive director. Since that time, PPL has grown from a budget of $11.5 million with 98 full-time staff, to a $38 million organization with 189 full-time staff. Today, Cramer leaves PPL in a strong, mission-driven position; a well-established and innovative community resource for low-income families and individuals.

MJ Scott Search Partners will lead a search for PPL’s next executive director, seeking candidates to build on PPL’s track record of success and significant positive community impact. Walter Rockenstein, PPL Board Chair, states, “The PPL leadership team has extensive experience, insight, and capacity to continue PPL’s exemplary work during this time of transition. PPL is a healthy and strong organization; staff and board are eager to see where this new opportunity takes us.”

The search process will likely take several months; a board developed review panel will consider internal and external candidates for this exciting opportunity.
