Summary:
As part of a team, develop and facilitate after-school programs for youth living in PPL affordable housing. During the academic year there are two main program components, experiential learning through enrichment activities and increasing academic performance. The program goals are; to expose youth to opportunities that exist for them within the community, assist them in building life skills, increase school success and build a positive attitude toward education. The program encourages discovery of youth’s interests and talents through service projects, educational enrichment, and recreational activities. During the summer, organize and implement a 10-week summer day camp program.
Essential Position Responsibilities:
- Develop and create after-school programming and monthly service projects
- Supervise groups of youth who participate in PPL youth programs and provide transportation to and from the program, 4 evenings per week for roughly 2 hours each
- On academic focused evenings, provide support to youth and volunteer tutor/mentors by developing and providing educational resources for them to utilize during tutoring sessions
- Work with Volunteer Coordinator to provide on-going support to program volunteers
- Interview, orient, train, and provide ongoing support to volunteer tutors
- Assist youth in development of social & life skills through hands on learning
- Network and become knowledgeable about community programs and resources
- Develop trusting relationships with youth and families through home visits & parent involvement
- Support youth’s education by performing school visits and being a Lunch Buddy Mentor at PA
- Perform recordkeeping, budgeting, and program evaluations using online database and Excel
- Plan special events such as service project days, family nights and small group field trips
- Participate in AmeriCorps trainings, brown bag sessions, service projects, and other events
Qualifications:
- Experience working with youth of diverse cultural backgrounds and income levels
- Strong interest in inner-city revitalization
- Ability to work as part of a team as well as independently
- Proactive in seeking out resources and connections for programming within the community
- Energetic and creative in working with and planning activities for youth
- Good organizational, communication and leadership skills
- B.A. or equivalent experience
- Ability to lift and carry 40 lbs. (carry program supplies)
- Valid drivers’ license, 3 years good driving experience; able and willing to drive passenger van
- U.S. citizen or Legal Permanent Resident Alien.
Compensation and Benefits:
AmeriCorps is a national service program similar to the Peace Corps and VISTA. The AmeriCorps living allowance for a minimum of 1700 hours of service is approximately $470 every two weeks. There is also an educational award of $5,350 upon completion of 1700 hours of service. Federal student loans deferred. Health care, transportation reimbursement and childcare reimbursement provided.
