Summary:
AmeriCorps is a national service program, similar to the overseas Peace Corps program, which involves people over 17 in a year of hands-on service to their communities. The community builder will work directly with PPL residents of targeted housing complexes to build community and address issues and concerns affecting their housing, safety and community.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Assist low and moderate-income residents to build sense of community within their building and in the greater neighborhood through meetings, events and outreach into the community.
• Develop one-to-one relationships with residents.
• Assist residents in organizing weekly events, gatherings, programs and other projects.
• Coordinate and assist in the planning of resident leadership training.
• Plan and facilitate trainings related to computer literacy, financial management and cultural awareness.
• Collaborate with PPL staff members and develop relationships with other community agencies and organizations to offer information and resources to residents.
• Through education, assist people to become successful residents, engaged community members and gain skills that support healthy living.
• Recruit resident and community volunteers to work on programs and events.
• Assist in production of reports and evaluations.
Qualifications
• Experience and interest in working with people from diverse backgrounds, ethnic cultures, economic and social situations.
• Interest in Community and Affordable Housing issues.
• Ability to work independently and as a team member.
• Strong organizational and problem solving skills.
• Self-starter with excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Facilitation and public speaking skills.
• Ability to organize, coordinate, track and complete multiple tasks as well as adjust to changing priorities.
• Ability to work some evenings and/or weekends.
• Ability to research information pertaining to resident and community strengths and concerns.
• Valid MN Driver’s License with a good driving record within the last 3 years consistent with PPL’s Driving Policy. Must have working, insured vehicle.
• High School Diploma or G.E.D., some college preferred
Compensation/Benefits:
The AmeriCorps living allowance for a minimum of 1700 hours of service is approximately $470 every two weeks. There is also an educational award of $5,350 upon completion of 1700 hours of service. Federal student loans deferred. Health care, transportation reimbursement and childcare reimbursement provided.
Position Status: Full-time, 12 Months (1700 hours minimum)
