A career advancement program for dislocated workers and metro-area healthcare providers

This training program involves individualized career and educational planning, training and mentoring. It is designed for employees who are currently working at one of five partner hospitals, in entry-level or support positions, and wish to pursue additional training in order to advance in their career.

Upon completion of this program students move into courses at MCTC. As incumbent employees, they will qualify for tuition reimbursement from their employers.

Benefit-eligible employees at the following hospitals can take advantage of this program: Abbott Northwestern Hospital (ANW), Children’s Hospitals and Clinics, Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC), Park Nicollet and North Memorial.

Types of positions you might apply for: 

Health career path is determined after taking a Strong–Campbell interest inventory, reviewing results and requirements, taking a preliminary MCTC college placement exam (Accuplacer), and examining high demand positions.

Career Assessments and Plans; Prioritizing/Organizing Work; Dealing with Change and Developing Resiliency; Customer Service; Work Ethics; Professional Etiquette; Cultural Etiquette; Computer Skills; Effective Workforce Communication (includes use of e-mail, voice mail and memos); Networking; Interview Skills; Overview of College, School Services and Accuplacer entrance exam; Adult Learning Styles; Financial Aid.

16 to 20 weeks

Incentives offered for attendance, participation, and completion
Internship: 

Job shadow with personnel in areas interest at the partner hospital

Retention services for those placed: 
One year of with mentor - a health care worker or manager - who can help with the student's goals.

Education level required: 
Pass the TABE at the 8th grade level or higher
