Connections to Work

Connections to Work is a referral-based program for families participating in Hennepin County MFIP (Minnesota Family Investment Program).

In response to federal welfare reform taking place in the mid-1990’s, Connections to Work was launched in 1998 through a contract with Hennepin County. In 2007, Connections to Work received the sole county contract to offer specialized Family Stabilization Services – intensive case management for families where at least one household member has a disability or health condition which prevents full-time employment. Connections to Work has earned continuous solid standing with Hennepin County, and is uniquely successful with families facing the greatest barriers to self-sufficiency.

Connections to Work participants work closely with a Family Resource Specialist to:

  • Complete comprehensive assessments with participants to determine family strengths and needs
  • Develop personalized goal plans for stabilizing their families and exiting public assistance
  • Become linked to training programs, health resources, children’s services and other resources
  • Participate in PPL workshops and events designed to educate on a variety of self-sufficiency topics and increase community networks.

Connections to Work serves more than 230 families a year. Staff utilize a coaching framework with participants which draws upon their strengths and helps identify motivators for change.
