PPL Career Development "Train To Work" What is the program? PPL’s Career Development program begins with 2-4 weeks of paid training and is designed to help meet the staffing needs of Abbott Northwestern Hospital, Childrens Hospital, Hennepin County Medical Center, North Memorial Hospital, Educational Credit Management Corporation, Allina Commons (Allina’s corporate offices), Metropolitan Health Plan and U.S. Bank. Trainees prepare for long-term success by studying soft skills, technology and job shadowing. For 12- 18 months after training Retention Specialists work 1:1 with graduates as they position themselves in jobs paying $10-$14 or more per hour, plus benefits and an opportunity to develop their career. (Trainees are hired by PPL and paid to learn new career/employment skills.) Four General Career Types All Post-Secondary Degrees Welcome. Minimum of HS Diploma or GED Required Class I: Clerical/Administrative Assistant (Healthcare & Finance): This class includes two weeks of soft skills and computer/office training as well as two weeks of job shadowing in a healthcare or financial setting. Also included is an introduction to medical terminology. Just a few examples of jobs accepted by past graduates of this class include:
Class II: Banking: Many types of positions are available--Teller, Proof Clerk, and Credit Assessor are just a few examples. This two week class is held from 1pm – 4pm (rather than 8:30 am – 4:00 pm) and pays trainees a $200 stipend upon completion (rather than $6.50/hr). Class III : CNA & Phlebotomy: This class is for CNAs, MAs or Phlebotomists who are both (1) currently certified in Minnesota and (2) have one year of experience working in their certified field. The class includes two weeks of soft skills and computer training as well as two weeks of job shadowing in a hospital. Class IV: Work Readiness (Healthcare): This class includes three weeks of classroom training as well as one week of job shadowing in a hospital. General Description of Topics Studied Each class includes soft skills and computer training and nearly all include job shadowing. Classroom study is devoted to developing an effective resume, successfully searching for jobs on the internet and practicing how to answer tough interview questions. Additional topics include effective workplace communication, professionalism and diversity. Time spent Job shadowing not only introduces trainees to work in a healthcare or financial setting but also creates an opportunity to connect with potential employers. |
