Stimulus money supports new AmeriCorps positions at PPL

_

PPL applied for and received five new one-year AmeriCorps national service positions through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

The Act attempts to stimulate the economy and create or save jobs. Aware of the lack of jobs for graduating college students, some stimulus money created additional national service positions for already existing programs, like the PPL/Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity AmeriCorps partnership.

PPL’s new members will start in mid-June and will serve in the following programs:

  • Property Management Division – Coordinating volunteer group projects
  • Center for Working Families – Volunteer Coordinator and facilitate computer literacy and budgeting training
  • MERC Alternative High School – Math and computer tutoring, assist with Post Secondary Educational Options program
  • Self-Sufficiency Program – Assisting walk-ins and call-ins to find affordable housing.
  • Employment Training – Developing employment training initiatives for immigrants and refugees.

This brings the number of AmeriCorps postions at PPL up to 24
