Keeping Kids In School

Studies show that low-income families are highly mobile, perpetually searching for cheaper housing. Such mobility can mean up to 50% of elementary students in high poverty areas do not attend the same school for the full school year. PPL’s Keeping Kids in School program is aimed at helping 16 homeless families beat those odds.

Pat Morley, a manager in PPL’s Self- Sufficiency Program, has been visiting homeless and battered women’s shelters to get the word out and to meet families who would qualify. He’s also contacted families who are “doubled up,” living overcrowded in small apartments. As a result, the children of 16 families will have a stronger chance at school success.

Funding for this initiative has been provided by Minnesota Housing and Pohlad Family Charities.
