We all face difficulties every day, some greater than others. Below are stories of determination and triumph that people have achieved in the face of adversity through the help of PPL. You can help someone write their story of success by donating to PPL.
TRISH: HOUSING
Trish was overwhelmed. Even though she was working she couldn’t afford a place to live, and her daughter was acting out due to the instability. Trish found PPL housing and has been thankful for the assistance she’s found there. PPL support staff found Trish’s daughter professional counseling to help her work through her personal struggles. They are also helping Trish with a certification transfer process that will allow her to get a job in a field she was already qualified for in another state. Trish is finding stability in her housing situation, her employment, and in her family, thanks to PPL.
JASON: EMPLOYMENT TRAINING
Jason had prepared for his job search with PPL’s employment training classes, so when a local hiring manager offered him an interview, even though there weren’t any current openings, Jason knew it was an opportunity to practice his new skills. The hiring manager was so impressed by Jason and the preparation he got at PPL that he offered him a job that day, and asked Jason to have his PPL classmates apply for jobs as well.
REGGIE: FAMILY SUPPORT
Reggie was homeless, barely working, and couldn’t drive himself anywhere due to a suspended driver’s license. Worst of all, he rarely saw his children. Reggie wanted to put his life back together and came to PPL. Today, Reggie has a place to live, steady work, and his driver’s license. Best of all, he sees his children every week. Reggie credits the help from PPL support staff for getting him this far and for helping him dream of bigger things: he has been saving money to eventually go back to school.
MIA: YOUTH PROGRAMS
Depending on who you talked to, Mia started trouble, or was being followed by it everywhere she went. Mia became a regular at PPL youth programming, learning both academic and life skills. The investment that PPL staff and volunteers made in her life has been a tremendously positive influence. Now Mia, once the center of conflict, is volunteering at a nearby assisted living home, bringing her friends along.
IMAN: HOUSING
Iman moved into PPL housing expecting a nice place to live, but found so much more. Through PPL support services, she has been working toward completing her nursing certification and her citizenship requirements. Iman’s children have been active in PPL youth programming, and her family has become a mainstay at community events, volunteering wherever help is needed. Iman is glad to be a PPL resident because it has given her more than housing: it has given her a home.
ANGELA: EMPLOYMENT TRAINING
Angela was a regular at PPL’s Computer Access Lab, learning basic computer skills, improving her typing, creating a resume, and eventually searching and applying for jobs online. When she received a call for a job interview, Angela scheduled a mock interview with PPL staff to help her prepare. Now Angela has a great job, and she’s thankful for the training she got from PPL that got her ready for it
BRENDA: FAMILY SUPPORT
When Brenda’s car broke down, her life only grew more chaotic. A mother of four and full time student with a part-time job, Brenda was already running all over town. Her income was as stretched as her time, with no means to make the necessary car repairs. PPL support staff connected her with a grant that got her car back on the road and gave Brenda some much needed peace of mind.
CHAD: YOUTH PROGRAMS
When PPL staff met Chad he was struggling in school and getting kicked-out of class regularly. By listening to Chad, his mom, and his teachers, PPL staff asked Chad to consider an alternative school that could be more attentive to his needs. It was just what he needed. Chad’s behavior and grades have improved remarkably from the new learning environment and supportive teachers at a PPL alternative school.
