About Strong Beginnings

Strong Beginnings is a title given by Hennepin County to early childhood centers that incorporate necessary components of quality early childhood programs:

  • Developmentally appropriate curriculum
  • High quality learning environments
  • Teachers knowledgeable in early childhood development
  • Small class size and low teacher-to-child ratios
  • Programming that engages parents as partners in their child’s development and education
  • Sensitivity to the non-educational needs of the child and family.

Strong Beginnings Centers must:

  • Be accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children
  • Have a family resource coordinator on staff
  • Have a child development specialist on staff
  • Maintain a 1:7 staff to child to for preschool age
  • Employ teachers with degrees in education.
