PPL’s afterschool youth programming pairs tutors and students for help with homework and reading skills.

PPL’s new onsite afterschool program in north Minneapolis is bustling with energy. Brianna is doing homework and deciding if the word “fish” is a noun or a verb. Mario is trying to convince his tutor that he is 5′ 12″ tall. J’nya has finished her homework and has begun tracing her hand to make great turkey artwork.

“I’m so glad I volunteered for this,” said Sequoiah, a first-year tutor. “I love it!”

PPL provides afterschool tutoring at five housing sites throughout the metro area, including the newly launched program site in north Minneapolis. Tutors are paired with kids who live in the building to get help with homework and build their reading skills.

“This is very helpful to me,” said Santrail, a seventh grader. “I get my homework done and I can get help from my tutor if I can’t figure things out.”

This fall’s youth programs in north Minneapolis follow a successful eight week summer partnership with the Network for the Development of Children of African Descent on literacy and cultural identity.
