Writing My Next Chapter
by Tiffany, PPL New Foundations Program Participant
I was 10 years old when my mother got sick and she could no longer take care of me. It was hard on me as her only child, and I decided I wasn’t going to deal with it. I started drinking and became addicted. I lived with many different family members, in many different states, who tried to take care of me, but I continued to use. In my struggle for sobriety I also battled depression. When I refused to stop drinking, my family members started to turn me away, and I had nowhere to go.
I had my first daughter in 2009 and up until 2012 she was second in my life of addiction. I tried to keep her life as stable as I could, but I didn’t know what stable was. My addiction was at its worst.
It was after I was homeless, living in my car with my daughter, when something finally clicked…
I surrendered and did what I had to do to get into treatment. I was in a treatment center for 5 months with my daughter and gave birth to my second daughter there as well.
I moved to PPL’s New Foundations program and I hit the ground running. I worked with Children’s Service Coordinator Antonia in just understanding where I was as a parent and how to be better. I cannot thank Antonia enough because it was rough in the beginning, but she stuck with me and helped me to get my oldest daughter adjusted to having a mommy again. She doesn’t know it, but just knowing I had Antonia’s support made me realize my life cannot stop here.
I took that attitude into my one-on-one sessions with my Family Service Coordinator Tyronia. Oh boy, Miss Ty would always ask me, “What are you doing for your recovery, Tiffany?” Like I wasn’t doing enough: I was volunteering, taking online classes to get my B.A. in Early Childhood Education, and attending all the groups New Foundations offered. I believe this was her way of always bringing me back and helping me to realize that I need to take care of myself and my recovery before I can be of help to anybody else. I take that with me every day.
I know I could go on and on about all the New Foundations staff – Kevin, Miss Colleen, and Miss DeBorah – these people have changed my life!
I went through a work training program with Pam from PPL’s Learning Center, and recently completed PPL’s Train to Work – Banking program. I have taken all these great resources PPL has to offer and I am inspired. I know now that with my hard work I am ready to make a difference in the job world and ready to write my next chapter in life.
