Description
Residents of PPL housing and local schools are connected with college students and recent grads, who serve as tutor/mentors and positive role models.
The tutor/mentors help youth participants achieve academic success through improving literacy skills, while helping them build self-esteem, develop social skills and gain an appreciation of others.
Participating college students and recent grads live in three PPL-managed multi-unit buildings. All buildings are located in the Phillips neighborhood in south Minneapolis.
The program also features field trips and group activities that build positive relationships with children, families and neighborhood residents. Each youth working with a College House student can expect a minimum of 2 hours per week of tutoring and mentoring time during the academic year.
Each house has a separate, kid-friendly tutoring center with academic resources, either on site or less than a block away.
