PPL College House Tutor/Mentor Program Off-Campus Housing & Community Service
How it Works:
- The College House is a geographically targeted tutor/mentor program, which focuses on healthy adult role models and academic achievement. Each house uses a separate, kid-friendly tutoring center with academic resources.
- College House residents for 2007-08 are 33 Juniors, Seniors, recent Grads, and Grad students from Bethel University, Augsburg College, MCTC, U of MN, and local AmeriCorps who commit to working with two children, of similar age and ability, from the immediate area around the house, 2-4 hours a week each, one-to-one, for the school year. Additionally, residents organize and participate in group activities one weekend day a month that are non-academic in focus.
- Residents get extensive in-house PPL volunteer training – “Kids Need Adults who Care”(KNAC),with components on PPL’s mentoring philosophy, diversity and anti-racism, relationship building, boundaries and expectations, and specialized areas on teaching reading and tutoring skills. Residents and the program manager meet every two weeks as a group and communicate by phone and e-mail on a regular basis.
- Residents have lifestyle expectations that include restrictions on use of tobacco, alcohol or other drugs, and on co-habitation. Housing units are gender specific. Residents are expected to be healthy adult role models 24/7/365.
- Children and youth (K-8) are recruited through direct contact with parents.Parents apply for their children.Tutors conduct periodic assessment. Parents may re-apply for their children in subsequent years.
- Leadership opportunities with additional benefits are available to returning residents.
- Over 90% of teachers, youth and parents report an increase in homework completion, academic confidence, positive behavior, and feeling more connected to their school and community.
