Creating Welcoming Places Through the Arts
The future site of PPL housing in St. Paul has undergone a dramatic transformation—before any construction begins. The long-abandoned corner of Hamline and University Avenues, soon the site of PPL housing, has gotten a makeover at the hands of local artists aiming to change the landscape of the Central Corridor Light Rail line.
Artists and volunteers are bringing life back to the one-time Midway Chevrolet site through a project called ARTIFY, an initiative of Springboard for the Arts, Twin Cities Local Initiatives Support Corporation, and the City of Saint Paul. Current and future projects, from social ‘paint-in’ gatherings to the exterior mural that now brightens the street corner, center around artistic interpretations of home, neighborhood, and community.
