About the School
Loring Nicollet Alternative School (LNAS) is a fully accredited high school for students who want something different from a large, traditional public high school.
The most successful environment for students is one that is safe and one that validates their experiences. The foundation of this environment at LNAS consists of respect for individuality, a multicultural and gender-fair curriculum, an informal atmosphere, participatory democracy, open communication, trust, honesty, values clarification, personal growth, self-discipline, and the balance between group and individual responsibility and decision making.
LNAS has the same core curriculum credit requirements and graduation standards as the Minneapolis Public School system. Students who graduate from LNAS receive a diploma from their home school in the Minneapolis system (e.g. North, Washburn, South, etc.) and participate in our own Alternative School graduation celebration.
English, science, math, social studies, creative problem solving, and other electives are offered. Strong emphasis is placed on social studies, gender studies, minority studies, self-knowledge, activism, and leadership. The average class size is 10-12 students.
Small size, high expectations and follow through, college prep. The objective of LNAS is to empower high school students to become more aware of who they are and what they need to reach their goals.
Psychologist on duty six hours per week for confidential counseling. Job services. Bus tickets provided for students living more than 2 miles from school.
Call for information and appointment. Waiting list, first come, first served; can be waived if student is within nine credits of graduation.
