The GroundBreak Coalition, a cross-sector initiative launched in 2023 with nearly $1 billion in funding, is tackling racial wealth inequality in the Twin Cities by helping families overcome systemic barriers to homeownership. PPL plays a key role in this effort, providing financial coaching and support to first-time buyers who lack generational wealth and access to accurate information.
Through GroundBreak’s pilot program, PPL helped clients like KJ Rolenc go from being denied a $160K mortgage to securing $360K for a duplex—transforming his housing situation into both a home and a source of income. As Henry Rucker, PPL’s Associate Director of Home Ownership, explains, the real barrier isn’t always credit—it’s the absence of family wealth and guidance. PPL’s work ensures that families not only receive financial assistance but also the knowledge and confidence to navigate the homebuying process.
This partnership is more than a financial intervention—it’s a pathway to stability, legacy-building, and generational change for families who’ve long been excluded from homeownership opportunities.
